By Rene V. Carbayas

ZAMBOANGA CITY, Sep 7 (PIA) – The Department of Agriculture (DA) in Region IX has urged more urban dwellers in Zamboanga City to try container gardening as an alternative to sources of food during the pandemic.

Recently, the DA has trained twenty urban dwellers in the city on containerized gardening and urban agriculture. The High Value Crops Development Program (HVCDP) of DA9 conducted the training on August 26-27, 2021.

The participants were housewives and students residing in barangays Tumaga and Tugbungan of this City.

In support to the promotion of urban agriculture as one of the resolutions under Bayanihan to Recover as One Act, the two-day training aims to equip urban dwellers with the skills and knowledge in container gardening to improve the quality of life in urban areas and to help families establish food-sufficiency in this time of pandemic.

Experts from DA9 and the City Agriculturist Office of Zamboanga shared lectures on urban agriculture, container gardening and vegetable production, edible landscaping, household composting, botanical pesticide and Natural Farming Technology System (NFTS) during the training.

Assorted vegetable seeds (pinakbet veggies) and information materials on vegetable production were distributed to the trainees as part of their initial steps in containerized gardening. (EDT/RVC/PIA9 with reports from Darwin Reyes/DA-RFO IX, RAFIS)
