 By Myra Cel L. Espinosa

ZAMBOANGA CITY, Sept 6 (PIA) – Zamboangeño Olympic Gold Medalist Hidilyn Diaz and Bronze Medalist Eumir Marcial inspire more youth in Zamboanga City to join sports.

“Isa sa dream ko na ma-revive ang boxing dito, maraming potential athletes dito sa Zamboanga City, sa boxing at sa weightlifting,” Marcial said.

(One of my dreams is to revive boxing here. There are a lot of potential athletes in Zamboanga City, in boxing and weightlifting.)

Zamboanga City recently welcomed the homecoming of Olympic Champions last Wednesday (September 1, 2021).

The local government turned over Php2.5M for Diaz and Php1M for Marcial for their outstanding athletic achievements.

The Olympic Champions are grateful to the support of Zamboangeños and the City Government for their support in the Olympics.

“Este gold medal hinde lang para comigo cun hinde para na todo Zamboangeños,” Diaz added.

(This gold medal is not only for me but for all Zamboangeños.)

Diaz also commended Zamboanga City as the sports program here continuous to excel because of the support given by the Local Government Unit (LGU).

“Na todo atleta aqui na Zamboanga, dream high kay nohay imposible basta tiene ostedes pangarap,” she added.

(To all athletes in Zamboanga, dream high because nothing is impossible if you have a dream.)

Marcial encourages youth to join boxing and other sports as this can help them achieve their dreams. He also appeals to the LGU and other private entities to support Zamboangeño athletes.

“Man hunto hunto quita todo ayuda con el mga atleta aqui para mas mucho dale honor na ciudad de Zamboanga,” he said.

(Let us join together to help the athletes so that more Zamboangeño can bring honor to the city.)

For athletes who also aim to join the Olympics, the Olympic Champions’ advise to them is to trust themselves and the support of their families, “sports has no gender, we already proved that Filipinos excel in sports,” Diaz said. (EDT/MLE/PIA9-Zamboanga City)
